Painting Flowers in Pastel!

Event Type:
Dates: Thu - Fri, Mar 26-27, 2026, 9:30am - 3:30pm

Flowers…can anything be more fun to paint?

Over these two days, we’ll study how to bring the most out of your painting of flowers: understanding light and shade, effective composition, the use of complementary colors and then the anatomy of specific blooms.

There will be fresh flowers as well as photographs to work from… bring your own photo if you have a favorite! The first morning will start with basic drawing, sketches and studies. We’ll then move on to preparing the Pastelmat paper for an under-painting value wash. Once dry, this will provide a base for a luxury of color and light, then finish up with closer detail in the painting’s main focus area.

Materials List

  • Clairefontaine’s Pastelmat paper in white or a light color – 12 x 15”is a good size – enough to have the freedom to start over or to paint a few pieces. (A pad of 12 white sheets can be found online at Jerry’s Artrama…to share?)
  • Foam core boards – a couple also for studies – somewhat larger than    the paper. (can find these at Walmart)
  • Charcoal and paper for studies.
  • Soft and hard erasers.
  • Baby wipes to keep hands clean.
  • Cutter knife

Pastels

Bring all your pastels! A good selection of hard and soft pastels is ideal, as well as pastel pencils.

If you have no pastels, a good selection box of Nupastels and/or Unisom pastels, as well as a small selection box of Stabilo CarbOthello pastel pencils will work fine.
