Please note: This class is a 3 day commitment over 15 days. During this 3 day workshop, we will all make an 8” round cherry basket that can be woven to be a shallow tray or a deeper bowl. The base and rim will be made of cherry. The staves are 5mm rattan and the weavers are 1.75m cane. The instructor will pre-finish the cherry base with 3 thin coats of polyurethane prior to the start of the class.
On the first day, weavers will cut and trim the cane staves and insert them into the base, to form the skeleton of the basket. Then weaving will begin! At the end of the first day, weavers will take their baskets and tools home (tools provided) and continue to weave until the class returns 14 days later. You will need to devote some time for weaving each day in order to get it done in two weeks. Mary will be available to help you any time you have a question or a problem.
The second week, weavers will return with a “mostly” woven basket. Then, it will be finished by sizing the cherry rim to fit onto the basket, then nailing and lashing it to the finished basket. The weaver can choose to make a simple basket with a solid cherry base or have the base embellished with a scrimshawed ivory disc that is custom-sized to that particular basket (see below).
Please note you will need to decide this when you sign up, as each base and ivory disc is custom sized in advance and this takes time. There are no returns or refunds on these custom orders.
