Event Type:
Instructor:
Dates: Mon - Tue, Feb 23-24, 2026, 9:30am - 3:30pm

Experience: No experience necessary. (please see supply list)

This workshop will cover all aspects of painting but with concentration on mark making to help the student have a more painterly, expressive piece of work while developing their own style.  Carol will paint a landscape with a rosette spoonbill from a reference photo using Pastelmat paper.  The student can choose to use any sanded paper from the supply list.

Carol will briefly talk about aspects of painting and do a demo explaining as she paints her color choices and mark making process.  You may want to paint 2 small paintings in the workshop so bring a few references the student would like to paint.  Carol will help you select the one to use for your masterpiece!

Loosen up with Mark Making

Pastel workshop with Carol Hall

Please read carefully to ensure you have what you need. Order anything online at least 2 weeks early. If you have questions email me at carolhall1974@gmail.com

You may purchase almost anything you need from Dakota Pastels: www.dakotapastels.com

Pastels:

Bring what you have but be sure to have a variety of hard and soft. A set of Rembrants may be purchased through the art center if you have none. Another nice beginner set is Jack Richeson’s artist choice.

Paper:

I will be using Pastelmat for my demos, a colored sheet for direct painting and a white sheet for underpainting. You may use any sanded paper you like. There are many to choose from. My preferred options are UART400 or 500 (mount these for wet underpainting to prevent curling), Lux Archival, Pastel Premier, and Canson Velvet.  Each will take marks differently so you may want to try a few. Bring scraps if you have them for practice work and 3-4 pieces of paper. You can buy them in sizes such as 9×12, 11×14, or 12 x16. You can also buy larger sheets and cut them to size.

Easel: art center’s or your own portable.

Easel Board:

You will need a support for your paper. It should be slightly larger. Options are wood, MDF, or gator board or gator foam all available on amazon. Blick and Dakota have some as well.

Other Supplies:

Vine charcoal, 2B pencil or harder, artist tape, a 1-2” bristle brush  if you want to do an underpainting( Snap makes a good one), kneadable eraser, apron or clothes you don’t care about, glassine ,tracing paper, or wax paper to transform your work.

I will be emailing you a photo to download or print out for our study warm up. You will need to bring reference photos of your choice at least 5×7. Bring a few and I will help you choose. You may use an IPAD if you prefer and a way to support it. If you want to paint from life, bring a small still life.
