Rae will start every painting with the grisaille technique using only cadmium red, cadmium yellow and ultra marine blue. Students will create a neutral gray to create a painting with tonal variations. Grisaille can simplify the painting process by allowing artist to focus on form and values before color. We will discuss composition values and lost edges once the student has a strong understanding of the technique color may be applied. White will be introduced last.
We will spend half of the class learning the Grisaille method of starting a painting and continue adding color. White will not be used until the end.

- Ultramarine Blue
- Cadmium Red
- Cadmium Yellow
- Titanium White
- Gamsole in paint brush cleaning container
- Old rags (cotton tee shirts work great)
- Assorted brushes
- Palette (Paper palette makes clean up easy)
- View finder
- phone for taking a picture of the set up
- Canvas or board for each session. bring a few medium sizes to choose from
Rae will provide the still life set up for both sessions.
Students can expect to leave class with a painting that is at least 50% done. Students can continue working on their piece in their studio if they have a photo of it. We will have a quick critique after each session.
