Color Theory & Mixing

Experience: This hands-on workshop is designed for beginners, intermediate and experienced oil painters.

This workshop will cover color theory, color mixing and color value.

We will start with the basics creating a color wheel which will include primary secondary and tertiary colors. From there we will explore contrasting colors, harmonies and values.

Supply list

  • Paint colors:
    • Burnt umber
    • Ultramarine blue
    • Cerulean blue
    • Cadmium red medium or dark( make sure it’s red not orange they vary and you should open the tube and look)
    • Cadmium yellow light
    • Dioxazine purple
    • Titanium white
  • A hard wood pallet or if you’re buying paper pallet please buy a grey one.
  • Gamsol or turpenoid (odorless turpentine)
  • Linseed oil
  • Palette knife
  • Some brushes in varying sizes… small stiff flat brush, med/sm brite brush
  • Med bristle brush. We won’t need large brushes for this workshop.
  • Three 12×12 canvas boards
  • Rags, paper towels, rubber gloves and apron or large cover all shirt

Oils and acrylics will work for this class. If you’re using acrylics then skip the turpenoid/gamsol and linseed oil and bring the medium of your choice.
