Originally from Rhode Island, Johan began his career in the arts as a pictorial painter for
outdoor advertising. Additional commercial endeavors included historical restoration,
large scale murals and trompe l’oeil, and being a scenic painter for the movies. Now
retired from commercial work, he has turned his attention wholly to plein air landscapes
and studio painting, primarily in oils and acrylics and teaching classes and workshops in
still life and plein air painting.
Johan’s primary interest is in working from life for a better understanding of light, space
and the energies of the surrounding environment.
Johan is a member of the Copley Society, the Oil Painters of America, the Connecticut
Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Venice Art Association, Lightchasers and Peace River
Painters.
